At Spectra LV Institute we focus on spasticity research and education
AS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT INSTITUTE WE ARE:
Fiercely Independent. Meticulously Evidence-Driven. Empowered by Human Networking.
“We formed around the concept of the LiVing Lab: Uniting clinicians, researchers, innovators and patient advocates locally, nationally and globally to engage freely around ideas to drive collaborative research and education that ultimately creates better outcomes for people living with spasticity.” Prof Rajiv Reebye & Dr Stefano Carda
Spectra LV Institute is powered by its innovative Thinkubator engine:
Spectra LV Institute operates as a biological system; a self-sustaining, self-reinforcing organism in which every component feeds every other. At its nucleus sits the Institute's identity — its founding purpose, values, and global leadership. Orbiting the nucleus are three organelles that together form the Thinkubator engine:
The Think Tank - generating new ideas and scientific questions
The Incubator - developing those ideas into rigorous research
The Accelerator - driving proven knowledge into clinical practice
These three functions are not sequential, they operate simultaneously and continuously, connected by shared data, collaboration, and dialogue.
Around the whole organism, the Institute's global network of expert clinician and research teams, each an independent centre of excellence, each connected via the nucleus.
This Spectra LV Institute ‘biological system’ produces three types of output:
Research - the primary trunk — translational, collaborative, patient-directed science across nine focused domains
Education - equipping clinicians worldwide with evidence-based, practical skills, as well as mentorship and support
Thought Leadership - shaping the standards, conversations, and future direction of the field, ensuring we remain grounded in the needs of the patients
These outputs are mutually reinforcing, each one strengthening the others.
The single measure of success: better outcomes for people living with spasticity.
Spectra LV Institute has been designed based on the core principals of our founding directors (Prof Rajiv Reebye and Dr Stefano Carda) who strive to deliver practical yet high-level research; empowering researchers, clinicians, and stakeholders via the Thinkubator, with the added dividend of generating and delivering high-yield education and impactful thought leadership.
“As founding Directors, we wanted to embed our geographic and friendship roots firmly in our Institute so we include our two locations: Lausanne and Vancouver as the ‘LV’ in our name. Our friendship is also firmly based in the belief that every positive human interaction can potentially evolve into a novel and innovative research and educational question - this is the basis of ‘LiVing Lab’ concept, bringing further depth to our LV”

ADVANCED INNOVATIVE RESEARCH
We support research that deepens understanding of muscle behaviour, movement, and patient outcomes.

Spasticity affects millions of people worldwide — yet too many remain undiagnosed, undertreated, or lost to follow‑up. Many who begin treatment discontinue within months due to inconsistent pathways, limited access to skilled assessment, and variability in technique.
Ultrasound‑guided practice, multidisciplinary care, and evidence‑based education remain unevenly available. At the same time, major scientific questions about muscle changes, long‑term outcomes, and optimal treatment strategies remain unanswered.
This is a field with enormous unmet need — and enormous potential.
